About Water-type Pokémon

Water is the biggest type in the series, with 154 Pokémon, more than any other. Nearly half of them are pure Water, and every generation has given a Water starter to the player. For all that size, the average Water type is modest, ranking in the bottom third for base stat total. Its appeal is reliability: only Electric and Grass are super effective against it, it resists four types, and its moves hit Fire, Ground, and Rock hard.

The generator above draws only from Pokémon with Water as one of their types, dual types included.

Spin the spinning Pokémon wheel, add more filters on the random generator with every filter, or try a random legendary or mythical pick or a shiny preview. Every starter trio has a water member too — spin the random starter Pokémon generator if that's the vibe you're after.

Water-type Pokémon by the numbers

Of the 154 Water-type Pokémon, 74 are pure Water and 80 have a second type. The most common pairing is Water/Rock (11 Pokémon), followed by Ground (9) and Flying (8). 8 of them are legendary or mythical, including Suicune, Kyogre, Palkia, Phione and 4 more.

By base stat total, the strongest Water-type Pokémon that isn't legendary or mythical is Walking Wake (590); counting legendaries, it's Palkia (680). The fastest is Barraskewda, with a base Speed of 136. The heaviest is Wailord at 398 kg, and the lightest is Wishiwashi at 0.3 kg. Among pure Water types, the highest base stat totals belong to Kyogre (670), Manaphy (600), Suicune (580), Milotic (540) and Blastoise (530). 9 starters are Water types: Squirtle, Totodile, Mudkip, Piplup, Oshawott, Froakie, Popplio, Sobble and Quaxly.

Generation 1 introduced the most Water-type Pokémon, 32. Counts use each Pokémon's current typing, so a species that gained or changed a type in a later game is counted under its present types.

Water moves on offense

Water-type moves are super effective against Fire, Ground and Rock, not very effective against Water, Grass and Dragon. No type is immune to them.

What are Water-type Pokémon weak to?

Water has 2 weaknesses: Water-type Pokémon take super-effective damage from Electric and Grass moves, but resist Fire, Water, Ice and Steel. For a dual type, the type calculator combines both types' matchups.
