About Steel-type Pokémon

Steel is the best defensive type in the game. It resists or is immune to 11 of the 18 types, far more than any other, and has the second-highest average base stat total and weight. It arrived in Generation 2 with Dark. It used to be even tougher: until Generation 6, Steel also resisted Ghost and Dark moves. Only 15% of Steel types are pure Steel, and the type is immune to Poison moves.

The generator above draws only from Pokémon with Steel as one of their types, dual types included.

Steel-type Pokémon by the numbers

Of the 65 Steel-type Pokémon, 10 are pure Steel and 55 have a second type. The most common pairing is Steel/Psychic (8 Pokémon), followed by Rock (7) and Fairy (6). 10 of them are legendary or mythical, including Registeel, Jirachi, Dialga, Heatran and 6 more.

By base stat total, the strongest Steel-type Pokémon that isn't legendary or mythical is Metagross (600); counting legendaries, it's Dialga (680). The fastest is Durant, with a base Speed of 109. The heaviest is Celesteela at 999.9 kg, and the lightest is Kartana at 0.1 kg. Among pure Steel types, the highest base stat totals belong to Melmetal (600), Registeel (580), Klinklang (520), Copperajah (500) and Orthworm (480).

Generation 5 introduced the most Steel-type Pokémon, 12. Counts use each Pokémon's current typing, so a species that gained or changed a type in a later game is counted under its present types.

Steel moves on offense

Steel-type moves are super effective against Ice, Rock and Fairy, not very effective against Fire, Water, Electric and Steel. No type is immune to them.

What are Steel-type Pokémon weak to?

Steel has 3 weaknesses: Steel-type Pokémon take super-effective damage from Fire, Fighting and Ground moves, but resist Normal, Grass, Ice, Flying, Psychic, Bug, Rock, Dragon, Steel and Fairy and are completely immune to Poison. For a dual type, the type calculator combines both types' matchups.
