How to use the ability generator
- Pick a mode. Random ability starts from the ability. Random Pokémon + ability starts from the species.
- Press Generate. The result appears straight away, with a one-line description of what the ability does in battle.
- Reroll as often as you like. Each click is a new, independent draw. Switching modes clears the current result, so take a screenshot first if you want to keep it.
Two modes
Random ability draws from every ability in the modern games and shows its in-battle effect plus the Pokémon that can carry it. Up to 12 sprites are shown, with a count of the rest, so you can tell at a glance whether an ability is everywhere or belongs to a handful of species. It is handy when you want an ability first and a body for it second. Swift Swim, Sturdy, and Keen Eye are among the most widespread; many others belong to a single line.
Random Pokémon + ability flips it around. The generator draws one of 1,025 Pokémon, then picks one of that species' real abilities, each with equal odds. Hidden abilities are part of the draw and carry a HIDDEN badge, and the other abilities the Pokémon could have are listed underneath, so you can see what you did not roll.
Why some abilities show no Pokémon
A few abilities only exist on Mega Evolutions, regional forms, or other alternate forms, such as Aerilate, Gorilla Tactics, or Delta Stream. The species pool on this site uses each Pokémon's base form, so when one of these abilities comes up you get its name and effect but no list of holders. That is expected, not a missing result. Roll again if you need a Pokémon to go with it.
What are hidden abilities?
Most Pokémon have one or two standard abilities, and many also have a third "hidden" ability that's harder to obtain — usually from special raids, events, or breeding. Hidden abilities are often the competitively interesting ones (think Protean Greninja or Libero Cinderace), which is why the generator labels them.
In this generator, a hidden ability is just as likely to come up as a standard one. A Pokémon with two standard abilities and a hidden one has a one-in-three chance of rolling its hidden ability. That makes this a quick way to find out which Pokémon have a hidden ability worth hunting for.
Ideas for using a random ability
- Challenge runs: roll a Pokémon and an ability, and only use Pokémon with that ability for your next playthrough. A wide ability like Intimidate is easy; a single-line ability can make the whole run.
- Battle drafts with friends: each player rolls an ability and has to build a team around it. Compare notes before you battle to agree on which game's rules apply.
- Fan characters and fakemon: a random ability generator for Pokémon is a good prompt for original characters. Roll an ability, read its effect, and design a creature or trainer whose personality fits it.
Questions about the generator
How many abilities can the generator pick from?
The generator draws from 310 abilities. Each click picks one of them with equal odds, so a rare ability like Wonder Guard is exactly as likely to come up as a common one like Intimidate.
Is the Pokémon and ability pairing legal in my game?
The Pokémon + ability mode only picks from abilities listed for that species, so the pairing does exist in the games. It does not check which game or generation you play, or whether a hidden ability was only released through an event, so check the rules of your game or battle format.
Does it include abilities from Scarlet and Violet?
Yes. The list runs from Generation 3 abilities like Overgrow and Levitate through Generation 9 additions like Embody Aspect and Tera Shell from Scarlet and Violet. Signature abilities tied to one Pokémon, such as Wonder Guard on Shedinja, are in the pool too, alongside the widespread ones.
Complete the random build
An ability is one piece of a build. Add four moves with the random moveset generator, fill out a party of six with the team generator, or go back to the main random Pokémon generator to filter by type, generation, or rarity. For a fully randomized challenge run, use all three together.
