How to play the Pokémon cry quiz

1. Choose your generations. All nine are on by default. Open Generations and turn off any you don't know well.
2. Press Start and listen. A cry plays straight away. Press Replay cry to hear it again as many times as you like; there is no timer.
3. Pick one of four names. The answer is revealed with the Pokémon's picture, and you can hear the cry once more knowing who it belongs to.
4. Finish all 10 rounds. You get a score and a rank, and you can share it or play again.

Choosing your generations

The Pokémon cry quiz can be as easy or as hard as you like. Keep only Generation 1 for a gentler start: every cry and every wrong choice then comes from the original 151, the Pokémon most players heard first and heard most. Add the generations you grew up with as you improve. With all nine turned on, the answer can be any of the 1,025 Pokémon, and so can the three names next to it. Whatever you pick, no Pokémon is the answer twice in the same game, and your choice carries over when you play again.

Tips for guessing by sound

• Listen to the shape, not just the pitch. Whether a cry rises or falls, how long it lasts, and whether it repeats are easier to remember than how high or low it is.
• Replay before you guess. There is no penalty for listening again, and a second or third listen often catches the detail that separates two similar cries.
• Use the four names. If you can recall the cries of two or three of the options and none of them matches, the remaining name is your answer.
• Learn from the misses. Every round ends by showing the answer, and the library below lets you hear any Pokémon again. Replaying the ones you missed is the fastest way to improve.

Why cries are hard to guess

Most players know a Pokémon by how it looks, not how it sounds. A cry only plays for a second or two when a Pokémon appears or is sent out, so even long-time fans have heard many of them without ever paying attention. That is what makes the Pokémon cry quiz a different challenge from recognizing artwork: it tests a kind of memory you probably never trained on purpose.

Practice with the cry library

The library under this section holds the cry of every Pokémon. Before a round of the Pokémon cry quiz, pick one generation from the filter and listen through it once, then play a game with only that generation turned on. Add more generations as they start to feel familiar. Going back to the library after each game, to replay the cries you missed, turns every wrong answer into one you will get right next time.

Playing with friends

The cry quiz is at its best out loud. Turn the volume up, put it on a speaker or a shared screen, and let everyone call out a name before anyone clicks. Take turns choosing the answer, or play separate games and compare scores and ranks at the end. The share button posts your result, including which generations you played, so friends know exactly what they are trying to beat.

Why can't I hear anything?

Your browser may have blocked it. Make sure your device isn't muted, then press Replay cry. Some browsers only allow sound after you have clicked on the page, and the Start button counts as that click.

Are these the real Pokémon cries?

They are the official cries from the main series games, in their current versions. The original Generation 1 cries were updated in later games, so a few Kanto Pokémon may sound a little different from how you remember them.
