About Dark-type Pokémon

Dark was added in Generation 2, alongside Steel, largely to rein in Psychic types: Psychic moves have no effect on Dark Pokémon, and Dark moves are super effective against Psychic. Dark types rank fourth for average base stat total and fourth for average Speed. Generation 6 made the type better on offense by removing Steel's resistance to Dark moves, while adding Fairy as a new weakness.

The generator above draws only from Pokémon with Dark as one of their types, dual types included.

Spin the Pokémon wheel, add more filters on the main random Pokémon generator, or try a random legendary Pokémon or a random shiny Pokémon. And if you like this type's spookier side, the games themselves go further than you'd expect — see the creepiest official Pokédex entries, several of which belong to Dark-types.

Dark-type Pokémon by the numbers

Of the 69 Dark-type Pokémon, 13 are pure Dark and 56 have a second type. The most common pairing is Dark/Flying (7 Pokémon), followed by Grass (7) and Dragon (5). 8 of them are legendary or mythical, including Darkrai, Yveltal, Urshifu, Zarude and 4 more.

By base stat total, the strongest Dark-type Pokémon that isn't legendary or mythical is Tyranitar (600); counting legendaries, it's Yveltal (680). The fastest is Chien-Pao, with a base Speed of 135. The heaviest is Guzzlord at 888 kg, and the lightest is Murkrow at 2.1 kg. Among pure Dark types, the highest base stat totals belong to Darkrai (600), Umbreon (525), Zoroark (510), Mabosstiff (505) and Absol (465).

Generation 5 introduced the most Dark-type Pokémon, 16. Counts use each Pokémon's current typing, so a species that gained or changed a type in a later game is counted under its present types.

Dark moves on offense

Dark-type moves are super effective against Psychic and Ghost, not very effective against Fighting, Dark and Fairy. No type is immune to them.

What are Dark-type Pokémon weak to?

Dark has 3 weaknesses: Dark-type Pokémon take super-effective damage from Fighting, Bug and Fairy moves, but resist Ghost and Dark and are completely immune to Psychic. For a dual type, the type calculator combines both types' matchups.
